Marshall County’s Chet Cretsinger brings down Apollo quarterback Colby Clark.

Apollo secured the number two seed in the 5A District 1 playoffs with their 30-14 win over Marshall County Friday and improved their record to 7-2 while the Marshals fall to 3-6 with one game remaining in the season.

Following the loss, Marshals Head Coach Evan Merrick said momentum was never in their favor but key stops led to points on the board late in the first quarter after Apollo scored on their first two drives.

Jackson Beal breaks up a pass intended for Apollo’s Gage Hayden.

The first drive went 80 yards, scoring on a nine yard run by Mariano McKenzie with the extra point attempt blocked by the Marshals. Apollo went up 14-0 on their next drive, going 72 yards and scoring on a 17 yard pass from Colby Clark to Peyton Peters, adding the two-point conversion.

The late first quarter score for the Marshals came with 42 seconds left on a 31 yard pass from Skyler Smith to Lucas Nichols with Chet Cretsinger adding the extra point.

An Apollo dropped punt snap gave the Marshals great field position at the Eagles 43 yard line with four minutes remaining in the second quarter but they were unable turn it into points. One more Marshall possession before the half ended in an interception by Jeffrey Johnson, ending the first half with a 14-7 Apollo lead.

Apollo added two points on a safety in the third quarter when the snap went over the head of Marshall County punter Austin Riley and following the kick from the 20 yard line, Apollo set up at the Marshals 40 yard line and scored on a 22 yard pass from Clark to Gatlin Humphrey to take a 23-7 lead.

The Eagles went up 30-7 near the end of the third quarter following a 56 yard drive that ended with a three yard touchdown run by McKenzie.

The Marshals second touchdown came on a 55 yard drive that was highlighted by a nice gain on a reception by Grant Utley followed by two five yard runs by Mason Green for the score early in the fourth quarter which would be the last time either team found the end zone.

Marshall County had 258 yards of total offence, 76 yards on the ground and 182 yards on the air. Mason Green was the leading rusher with 66 yards on 17 carries. Smith had 18 pass completions on 34 attempts to Nichols and Utley, both with three receptions for 45 yards, Green had two receptions for 22 yards and Buchmeier three receptions for 23 yards.

Apollo finished the game with 350 yards of offense, 259 on the ground on 38 carries led by McKenzie with 214 yards on 21 carries. Clark passed for 91 yards, completing seven of eight attempts. Peters led receivers with three receptions for 44 yards.

The Marshals will play their final game of the season next Friday at home against Spencer County, a Class 4A team out of the 4th District. The Bears will come into the game with a record of 2-7.

“We’ve got to regroup and find a way to end this thing on the positive”, Merrick said. “There’s one more week of football left and it’s a matter of who wants to make the most out of that week.”

Mason Green rushed for 137 yards Friday, capping off his senior season with close to 960 yards.

Celebrating Senior Night Friday, the Marshals beat Spencer County 20-14 to send off their 13 seniors with a win, the first Senior Night win for the program in 12 years. The win wrapped up the 2017 season on a high note, finishing with a record of 4-6.

“Big win tonight…I want to thank the seniors for putting in four years of work here…they laid it all on the field this last time and made some big plays when they had to”, Head Coach Evan Merrick said. “Grant Utley on defense…Mason Green played some defense there. We put some drives together and it was just a total team win.”

The Marshals put points on the board first on an 18 yard touchdown pass from Skyler Smith to Green to lead 6-0 after the point after attempt was blocked. The Marshals recovered a fumble on Spencer County’s next series but were pushed back on penalties and on fourth and six, attempted a 24 yard field goal that was no good.

Grant Utley brought down Spencer County’s Patrick Kijinsky with help from Blain Bizzle.

Spencer County went on to score the next two touchdowns, the first by Trevor Hunt on a five yard run after he gave the Bears several big gains on the drive. The second came on a 14 yard run by Brandon Jewell to lead 14-6

With just over two minutes left in the first half, Lucas Nichols caught a 45 yard pass for a touchdown  to put the Marshals up 14-12 after the two point conversion attempt failed and they headed to the locker room at halftime down 14-12.

In the third quarter, Spencer County fumbled the kick-off which was recovered by Nichols but the Marshals drive ended at the 14 yard line with a missed 31 yard field goal attempt.

Another Spencer County fumble on a high punt snap led to a one yard touchdown run by Green and two point conversion pass completion to Ty Buchmeier for a 20-14 lead late in the third quarter.

Spencer County put together a steady downfield drive in the fourth quarter, putting the Marshals lead in jeopardy, but a fumble by quarterback Wyatt DeRudder, gave the Marshals the ball at the 15 yard line with just under six minutes remaining in the game.

The drive stalled out on fourth and four putting the Marshals in punt position, going with a fake punt snap directly to Green who picked up the yardage needed for a first down with two and half minutes remaining. Penalties backed them up to their 10 yard line and a punt from the 13 yard line gave Spencer County the ball at midfield with 1:35 left on the clock.

Jon Smith in at quarterback for the Bears, was dropped behind the line of scrimmage by Utley forcing them to go for it on fourth and seven. Unable to get the first down, the Marshals took over on downs, taking a knee on the final play to finish out the win.

“Probably the best team win we’ve had this year”, Merrick said. “No better way to send these guys out of their career in orange. Great momentum for the underclassmen to take into the future. A great way to cap off this season.”

Marshall County had 134 rushing yards, the majority coming from Green who grinded it out for 137 yards on 32 carriers. Smith completed 15 of 20 passes for 153 yards and two touchdowns with the majority of those yards earned by Nichols with four receptions for 105 yards. Defensively, a good night for seniors Utley and Austin Riley, Utley led with 14 tackles, Riley had 13.

Spencer County had 278 yards in offense, 261 on the ground, picked up by Trevor Hunt who ran for 140 yards on 17 carries and Jewell with 94 yards on 11 carries.

Lucas Nichols picked up some yardage with Skyler Smith helping out with blocking.

The campers and high school players took a moment for a group photo during the 3-day camp for K – 5th grade students.

Marshall County Football held their annual K-5th grade elementary camp with sessions on Saturday, Monday and Tuesday. Head Coach Evan Merrick said they had a great turnout at this year’s camp and all the kids had a great time.

“Several of our high school guys stepped up to help and that was huge in making it a success”, Merrick said. “Saturday we took all campers through fundamental stations of each position group in football. Monday and Tuesday we were indoors because of rain but were able to have our flag football tournament and on the last night had our camp competition and awards.”

Merrick said he looks forward to seeing many of the campers playing in the youth league this fall. This week also concludes the Marshals spring practice and marks another step closer to the 2018 season.

Thirty-five Marshall County football alumni ranging from the classes of 1976 through 2017, suited up Saturday to play in the second alumni game against Graves County. Marshall County won the first alumni game three years ago 10-8 but it was the Eagles who took the win Saturday 21-7.

Stephen Barga (2) and Lane Roberts (1) discussing the game with Caleb Bogaczk (center).

The Marshals struck first, scoring on a Lane Roberts (2015) pass to Tristan Prange (2017) with the extra point tacked on by Kevin Byars (1983) to lead 7-0 at 5:24 in the first quarter. Graves County tied the game at 9:04 in the second quarter after recovering a fumble near the goal line.

With 4:48 left on the clock in the second quarter, a quarterback keeper by Graves County’s Stephen Hatchell (2000) and extra point by Rodrigo Garcia (2016) put the Eagles up 14-7. Graves County added another TD two minutes later on a long pass from Hatchell to Smith for a 21-7 lead, which would be the finals score with neither team able to get on the board in the second half.

The first half ended on a positive note for the Marshals with a Lucas Forsythe (2017) pass interception.

Proceeds from the Alumni Game will go to the Marshall Strong Fund.
